Materials circular construction course

Overview

The University of Tokyo Graduate School of Engineering and Shimizu Corporation have established a collaborative research course focused on the development of circular buildings that contribute to realizing a circular economy while considering global resource sustainability. This course aims to implement a circular economy in the construction industry by advancing research on establishing design and construction systems for buildings.

Duration

October 1, 2023 – March 31, 2027

Research Themes

  • Development of a simulation model to track and predict the elemental cycles of key inorganic construction materials, such as Ca, Si, Al, and Fe
  • Proposal of circularity indicators for the construction sector and scenario analysis for achieving sustainable construction activities
  • Development of new construction materials and components with high elemental and material recyclability, along with innovative joining methods
  • Research on versatile materials that can achieve multiple functions based on their applications, with the ability to easily alter their properties and forms, as well as the development of practical manufacturing methods for such materials
